(no subject)
Aug. 4th, 2010 12:34 amI know I mentioned a couple of entries back that I promised not to complain about
ontd_political for a while. However, I have to break that promise, because after a mod post like this comes out, it's kinda hard not to.
After reading pretty much most of the comments in that post, as well as this one at
sf_drama (which gives good background as to why the mod post was issued in the first place), I'm still trying to gather my thoughts on everything that happened. This is probably the best I can come up with right now:
1) People who take the terms "political correctness" or "PC" seriously, as the mods have, are people to which I just can't give much respect. (Bonus points if they consider themselves "liberal" or "progressive.")
2) The mods' behavior in both posts -- namely, the hypocritical dismissal of any criticism of what they're doing and their smugness in response to that -- has been baffling and unsettling, if not surprising. Exhibit A. (And that isn't even the worst of it either.)
3) The people who have "flounced"/announced their intent to leave the comm are people I've complained about before, and I stand by what I've said before. I also sympathize, and to a certain extent agree, with the notion that the comm is not, was never, and will never be theirs, but that it belongs to all 10,000+ members, who do not share the same viewpoints, and that dissent and agreeing to disagree ought to be allowed. Bearing that in mind -- as well as the fact that no one involved in that wank came out of it looking good at all -- they have made many good arguments, and I understand their reasons for leaving.
4) I find myself sympathizing with
salienne here,
rauduskoivu here and here, and
lisaquestions here.
Pretty sad and depressing, but it has given some food for thought. I'm probably gonna have to sleep on it.And now I'm stop complaining.
So yeah, for this and other reasons I won't get into here, today has been a Bad Day™. So a couple of positive things:
Remember the Mild-Mannered Shipper thing I mentioned last entry? Well, in case you missed it,
squareofme made a couple of TF-specific banners. Seriously, you guys, she is amazing, and they're totally worth seeing. ;-)
And this entry just won't be complete without a couple of more memes:
