Giant robots wearing rainbow flags
Nov. 18th, 2009 01:55 amA geeky fandom-related entry for y'all, because a.) I'm avoiding doing any homework other than what is absolutely necessary (and I don't really have anything "absolutely necessary" except study for a big Japanese test tomorrow that I know I'm going to do all right in anyway), and b.) I don't talk about this kind of thing nearly enough (and this is why most of you friended me, right? XD). Feel free to ignore if none of this is your thing, but I'll try to keep things interesting anyway. ;-)
Michael Bay Wants Less Action in Transformers 3
Well, I guess I should be happy he's taking the criticisms of ROTF somewhat to heart since, racism and sexism and homophobia and xenophobia and toilet humor and other general disgustingness aside, the packing of so much action in two and a half hours without character development or even "breathing room" was the movie's biggest problem. I would love to see a franchise like this have a much greater emotional (and maybe intellectual?) impact to get it out of its "it's just a kid's toy line" gutter it's been in for the past quarter century (sort of like what people have said about Batman, though I don't agree with that assessment at all), but I don't trust Bay to go any further than a hackneyed Darker and Edgier.
There's also been a lot of crap going around about this, notably regarding the characters' faces and how they're somehow "ugly" or "impersonal." I can see where they're coming from (they do look all the same, don't they?), I really don't mind, mostly because a.) I don't follow the comics at all (though I've heard good things with what IDW has been doing), b.) it's an interesting way to emphasize the characters' "alien-ness," which you don't see too often, and c.) it just....really isn't that bad! This is why I avoid TF fandom outside of LJ. ^_^;;
OK, to switch gears to some happier things:
infected_wound brought this amazing LoGH/Beauty and the Beast parody to my attention not too long ago. My reactions: a.) I didn't know there was an archive for 4chan threads!, b.) I wonder what would happen if there were a musical version of LoGH (it would kinda make sense, wouldn't it? 8D), c.) the slash undertones, Yang's cameo, and the Phezzani bit at the end were all, as Rod Blagojevich would say, FUCKING GOLDEN. :DDDDDDDDDD
I admit I'm not a huge fan of David Willis/
shortpacked, and I haven't been following the comic for a while now, but this special strip caught my attention:
( Don't tell Galvatron, but Shock Fleet's lookin' at him funny... )
(And it looks like he just did a strip on Evangelion. LOVE IT. SO. MUCH. XDDDDDDDDDD)
A bit late, but speaking of gay Transformers, but the ever-awesome
primusatemyleg made me this great fanart of Bluestreak and Perceptor being all bromance-y and adorable. <3 (If this were Earth, they'd probably be watching the Leonids, which I totally would be watching if it weren't so goddamned cold out at night, and I weren't so lazy. >_>;)
( Cut for size... )
Of course, if you want to get even more good ol' homosexuality, there is the softcore porn in Dragon Age: Origins (linked because I don't know how to embed -- and it's most definitely NFSW anyway). It's the first that Queerty has seen gay sex in a video game, but hasn't there been this sort of thing before? I've heard of same-sex relationships in the Metal Gear Solid games (only example I can think of off the top of my head), and maybe even allusions to sex, but nothing at this level. Then again, I don't know diddly squat about video games, so maybe someone can help me out here please? (OH MAN WHY DON'T I PLAY VIDEO GAMES I MEAN JEEZUS D: ) Anyway, the scene was pretty hot, but the thing with porn is that you can never get the background music right, and this was no exception. O_o;
And how about various syndicated newspaper comic strips as written by classic authors, hmm? My favorite is Borges doing Doonesbury, but only because Borges is the only one out of all of them that I would actually enjoy.
Here's a hilarious video that
edge_chan posted on her LJ twice (I got the hint the first time, Milena :P <3 ), and I just had to share. (And if you're looking for a bit of homoeroticism, it's here too. ;-)
( Cut because this entry is too long as it is... )
tf_rare_pairing finally got new mods and a reorganization! It really is my kind of comm, but the way it was run before wasn't all that well, and I had sort of a passive-aggressive attitude toward it, to the point where I had to drop it from my f-list for a while. Hopefully it'll be better from here on out. ;-)
And finally, another song I've been obsessed with lately (and yes, it's fandom, it counts): The Twilight Sad, "The Room" I never realized just how good Forget the Night Ahead is; it's far better than their first album. (Of course, I can't listen to it on repeat, because that's a surefire way I'll get burned out on an album real quick.) I've been on a real kick with these guys lately, in case you couldn't tell. XD
That's it, I guess. I'll probably regret this post in the morning, but oh well. ^_^;;
