"I don't have fun. Actually, I had fun once. In 1962. I drank a whole bottle of Robitussin cough medicine and went in the back of a 1961 powder-blue Lincoln Continental to a James Brown concert with some Mexican friends of mine. I haven't had fun since. It's not a word I like. It's like Volkswagens or bell-bottoms, or patchouli oil or bean sprouts. It rubs me up the wrong way. I might go out and have an educational and entertaining evening, but I don't have fun." -- Tom Waits

It's very possible Waits never actually said this; in Wikiquote this is listed under the "Attributed" section.  But this explains me and my feelings about, well, various things so well -- not the cough medicine and the James Brown concert, of course, just what he's trying to say.  It was refreshing to find that there was someone out there who felt the same way I did, a feeling that I otherwise would've had a hard time explaining.  I'm not much of a quote collector, but this stood out enough for me to put on my Facebook profile.  ^_^;

Upcoming days... )

************************************************************************
So last night I had to go to the hospital.

I'M FINE, in case you wanted to know; otherwise I wouldn't be posting this right now and trying to catch up on entries.  8D  Last night, while watching the State of the Union address*, I was beginning to feel very weird -- lightheaded, a bit nauseous, and so fatigued I couldn't sleep.  I tried going to bed early, but at around 12:30 I got up to have something to eat.  Out of curiosity, I took my temperature -- and it was 103.1F (39.5C).  I'd never had a fever that high in quite a while, so I did what any sensible, rational person would do and freaked out.  :P  I called my parents at home (waking them up in the meantime) to ask them what I should do.  My mom told me to take a big dose of Tylenol, and because the health center on campus is no longer open 24 hours I had to go to the hospital nearby to get checked out just to make sure it wasn't anything really bad; I had to call Public Safety to have someone pick up me up and drop me off at the ER.

Needless to say, it wasn't anything more than an upper respiratory infection; I wasn't even there an hour, and after I got back I was able to get some rest.  I did have to skip class and go to the health center today to get my blood pressure checked out, and I have to go back tomorrow for a follow-up, and in the meantime I'm taking as much Tylenol and Advil and cough drops as I can, and trying to get enough rest too.  Though this is going to be hard, since my dad is picking me up tomorrow rather than Saturday, which means I have to start packing tonight.  :/  Anyway, I'm slowly starting to feel better; the sore throat is mostly gone, as is the fever and the worst of the fatigue, but I still have a rather nasty cough.  I can't wait to go back home, though I hope I get better so I can still have the job.  -_-;

*Say what you want about Obama needing to stand behind his words (he does), about not agreeing with certain aspects of the speech (there were definitely things I found worrying), or about being cynical about the direction the U.S. is going (understandable, but not enough reason to stop caring).  He really brought it last night -- he was surprisingly forthright and snarky, which is refreshing, and just what we all needed, not just Congress.  And anyone who doesn't take himself too seriously and can own up to his mistakes gets my support, even if the past year was a clusterfuck and his personal politics are significantly far to the right of mine.  :D
