Day 01 | Your favourite song

Oh man, where do I begin?  I can't choose a single favorite song; I do like many songs over others, but picking an all-time favorite is a judgment call I'm not willing to make.  It also depends on my mood at any particular time, as well as whatever I manage to discover -- sometimes something just blows my mind and my favorites list changes again.  But I've given it some thought, and I've managed to narrow it down to at least two.

First, "Good Morning, Captain" by Slint.

Definitely not the most accessible stuff out there -- it's harsh, grinding music with no typical verse-chorus-verse structure, self-deprecating and emotionally stark lyrics, and the occasional scream breaking though the overall minimalist, dirge-like atmosphere.  But I really, really enjoy it, and Spiderland, the 1991 album it's from, and it's hard for me to explain why.  I think it has something to do with its emotional honesty, how it manages to evoke a mood and/or an image extremely vividly -- one that gets a response, one that doesn't try to scare you or seem "edgy" only to pull back to someplace safe and therefore make it less entertaining -- how it takes you someplace you don't want to go but should go, and how cathartic it is.  Or maybe it's because I've never heard anything that sounds quite like it -- the band has been credited for starting the "post-rock" genre, and you can tell that even though they use the standard rock instruments, it doesn't sound quite like rock.  Or maybe it's the awesomely poetic lyrics (which were based off of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, in case you were wondering).  Whatever it is, I really liked this song when I first heard it, and I still enjoy it now.

The other one is "I Believe in You" by Talk Talk.

I've already featured this song before, so I won't say much about it again.  Another sad one, but much, much more hopeful and beautiful.  Even after listening to it so many times, sometimes it still catches me off-guard and I get chills down my spine -- and any song that manages to do that is a good song, hands down.  And it somehow manages to avoid being cheesy, too, which is always a plus in my book.  ;-)

Of course, there's also always my most-played song on Last.FM:
