Sorry I haven't posted in a week, but there haven't been too many interesting things going on, especially due to burnout. Also, my laptop's been acting funky lately (and not in the good, George-Clinton-meets-Sly-and-the-Family-Stone way); it's been making this rattling/buzzing noise whenever it's on, and on occasion it gets to be quite loud. I think it's the fan, since I haven't heard the fan act normally for a while, and the laptop heats up faster than I've previously noticed. Otherwise, it works perfectly fine, and I think I can hold out for the next four weeks or so, but I really want to try to get it checked out next week -- I get worried about it ever since my hard drive crashed last June. :(

On Wednesday I went to a lecture by a local boatbuilder who apprenticed with traditional boatbuilders in Japan; the traditions there are dying with the craftsmen and no one seems willing to keep up the traditions there, so this American has taken it on himself to get the boats' exact specifications and learn how to make them. The lecture was more focused on traditional Japanese pedagogy as opposed to a Western artisan's education (Confucianist principles, rote memorization, long apprenticeships, etc.), and on the experiences he had with his teachers, and overall it was very fascinating. And last night I went to a screening of a documentary on kamikaze pilots called Wings of Defeat; it was very interesting, and I highly recommend it (it will air on PBS sometime next month on Independent Lens, but I believe it will be an abbreviated version). The writer and producer was there, and took questions.

So tonight the campus radio station is holding its annual music festival. The headliners are The Death Set and Tobacco, and Brown Heir and Ghost Ghost are opening. I have never heard of any of these bands, so I don't know if they're worth plunking $5 down to go see. Once again, there's a lot of interesting things happening at the same time; Benjamin Button is playing tonight and City of Men is playing tomorrow, there's a good play going on tonight and tomorrow night at the black-box theater in my dorm building, and then there's the concert tonight. Oh, and I'm supposed to help organize a fall symposium proposal tomorrow afternoon, but that's a Have-To-Do. We'll see.

How about a good, creepy video this week?

I'm not the biggest Depeche Mode fan, but the song's catchy and the video's good.  "Home" will always be my favorite DM song, though.

Have a good weekend everybody!  ;-)
