"Meanwhile, back in Marwencol...."
Nov. 18th, 2010 01:18 amSo this is a recap of what's been going on in my life lately:
LAST FRIDAY:
* I finally got to see Inception -- and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! Which is really surprising, since I don't really like Christopher Nolan all that much. >_>; Sure, it's got some parts that are pretty out-there, and it's nothing worth jumping in a new fandom for, but I gotta say, it was very intelligently written, and was fast-paced without being a Michael Bay ripoff. A great movie, and one I recommend seeing if you haven't done so already.
* I also saw a play called Marisol, written by Puerto Rican playwright José Rivera, and put on in a small student-run black box theater located in one of the dorms. I'll let the program speak for itself as to what it's about: "Marisol is a play about faith and power. It doesn't ask whether or not God exists; it asks what happens when we know God exists but also know that he is senile and bad at his job. Suddenly the world is a very lonely place. In a world without God the characters become responsible for their own destinies. When our fate is ours to control, what will we do with it? Are we ready to shoulder the responsibility that was previously reserved for the divine?" The play was really good, and not just because it's not as depressing as it sounds (it's very deliberately over-the-top at points), and it struck a chord because some of the themes it touched upon are things I've been thinking about a lot as a result of meditation and other things (which is for another post). I really liked it, and between it and Inception it made for quite a full night. ^_^;
SATURDAY:
* YEASAYER!!!!!!!!! They came to play at my college Saturday night, and lemme tell ya, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to! I've been looking forward to this for a while now, and I wasn't disappointed.
( Everybody's talking 'bout me and my baby, making love 'til the morning light... )
* Even though I went to the Yeasayer concert alone, during the last set change I ran into a friend of mine here who also went to high school with me, who I'll call Dostoevsky Fan (because he's really fascinated by Russian literature and culture XD). It turned out that he brought another kid from high school who currently goes to college in Boston, who I didn't expect being there at all -- I'll call him Jerkface McShitstain. As you can tell by the name I've given him, I really didn't want to see him -- he was quite the dick to me (and pretty much everyone) back in high school, and has the kind of carefully constructed "abrasive" personality that never jives well with mine. The last time I saw him was when we graduated over three years ago, and I intended to keep it that way -- guess we can't always get what we want after all.
( In which quadruplify decides attending a high school reunion is simply out of the question. )
SUNDAY:
* Quidditch World Cup in New York City! Which I didn't get to attend, because of the concert. D: It turns out that my college's team has won yet again, which is totally awesome, and I'm really bummed I missed out on it. But to make up for my not-going to the QWC like I was hoping, here's a review of the event, a round-up of articles and mentions in the media, and a well-written Time magazine piece that I think y'all will enjoy. ;-)
TUESDAY:
* Eli Clare, a transgender queer activist with cerebral palsy, read from some of his poetry and creative nonfiction, most of which had to do with the theme of "the body as home" and how being queer and being disabled intersect, as well as how the oppression of queer people with disabilities is also related to environmental destruction and the genocide of Native Americans. It sounds dry and academic, but it really was far from it (as you can probably tell here); his writing was very powerful, relevant, and convincing, and I was floored by the poetry he used even in his prose pieces. You could also tell that he was very passionate about what he was doing, and that he was a truly compassionate individual concerned with social justice. It was inevitable, then, that I bought copies of both of his books, Exile & Pride, a book of creative nonfiction, and The Marrow's Telling, a poetry chapbook. A great experience all around, and I'm glad I went.
WEDNESDAY:
* The last tai chi class of the semester. :( It looks like I'm going to have to find a way to practice what I know between now and February, because I've really been enjoying it and I'd like to keep up with it as much as possible.
......So yeah, I've had a busy enough week. And that's not including schoolwork, meetings with professors, and stuff like that. ^_^; Work is slowly easing up right now -- the ES seminar project is wrapping up nicely, the last lab "report" for geology is due Tuesday, and the only big thing I have to focus on is the final project for GIS, which won't be big considering we only have about a week and a half to do it, and I already have a good idea for what I want to do with it. Not to mention I'll be doing a lot of cool things this weekend too -- which I'll talk about sometime next week. ~_^
I definitely can't wait for Thanksgiving, that's for sure -- as much as I prefer being here rather than back home in Connecticut, and as much as I no longer feel all that comfortable celebrating it, it'd be good to leave the pressure cooker that is college for a little bit and decompress. Maybe I'll finally get around to doing a couple of linkdumps around here? I haven't done any in a while. O_o; Or maybe a music sharing post would be more to your liking? :D
All right, this post is long enough, I've done my RL infodump this week. So I'll end it with the trailer for Marwencol, a documentary I really really REALLY want to see:
