Jul. 14th, 2010 05:54 pmSo I managed to have the day off today!! :D I have somehow managed to spend it sleeping in and watching tons of clips from old Def Poetry shows on YouTube -- couldn't ask for anything better. (And I can post a couple of links to some of the videos I liked, if anyone's interested.) I do have work tomorrow, though, so I'm trying to make the most of (what's left of) it.
It also turns out that we'll be reading Guns, Germs, and Steel for
ontd_pbooks pretty soon. I'm a little apprehensive about it -- namely, because I've heard many things about the book being hugely Eurocentric -- but I've heard good things about it otherwise, and I own a copy of the book and have been meaning to read it for a while. But I guess we'll also be reading Reading Lolita in Tehran if anyone wants an alternative, because that took second place in the poll -- I'm not quite sure how that's going to work, but we'll see what happens. Trying to read three books at one time -- should be fun! Or, uh, not. ^_^;
Also, I managed to find something wonderful last night: a Durarara!! random pairing prompt generator. Oh man, I'm gonna have so much fun with this, even if it's just enjoying all the weird shit it comes up and marveling at all the characters I don't know. :PPP
Finally, the five questions meme has raised itsugly head yet again! This time with questions from
two_grey_rooms:
1. do you have a favorite poet? who are they, do you remember the first poem you read by them, what is your favorite poem, etc. basically i'm commanding you to ramble ad nauseam about poetry. I LIKE POETRY. if this question is Irrelevant To Your Interests, what's your favorite youtube video? :D?
I don't really have a favorite poet, per se; most of the poetry I read tends to come from
greatpoets, which is perhaps not the best thing to be doing when it comes to reading poetry, LOL XD Though I am quite partial to Jack Gilbert, Yusef Komunyakaa (if I spelled his name right), Mary Oliver, Margaret Atwood, Billy Collins, and.......you know what, I'm just going to leave this here -- if a poet has something on that list, chances are either I like them, or I don't know much about them but want to read more of their work.
Oh yes, and I'm starting to get into slam poetry and spoken word, too, if the above is any indication. ;-)
Favorite YouTube video? Hard to say, but I guess it'd have to be this.
2. if you had the national held captive in your basement for a day, what would you do with them?
If I could, I wouldn't hold them captive in my basement -- I'd let them go. Because holding anyone like that really hits my conscience and OMG-do-not-want-what-the-fuck-are-you-thinking? button so hard that I just couldn't do it. It's not being afraid of getting caught so much as having it feel so utterly wrong, and I could never forgive myself for it, and I don't want to do that to myself.
Of course, if I had to hold them captive for whatever reason -- I'd probably get together some friends (well, what little friends I have) and be all "HEY I HAVE THIS REALLY AWESOME BAND LOCKED IN MY BASEMENT DO YOU WANT TO CHILL WITH THEM?" Except be less creeptastic about it, of course. And we could pass the time talking about, IDK, their songwriting process and their Outlook on Life™ and random shit like that. And we could all try cooking them a badass dinner (even if none of us has the chops) because they'd get hungry, and because they're The National and they fucking deserve it. ^_^;
3. what would you do to best prepare yourself for a zombie apocalypse? "cower in mortal fear" is not an option, i said PREPARE, dammit.
I wouldn't. There are no such things as zombies, I wish people would just SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT THEM ALREADY, and why the hell would I prepare for something that will never happen?
But if I were to humor you and say, "But what if it is possible?", well, I still wouldn't think too much of it. They're undead, their bodies are halfway rotting, right? It'd be nothing to take a lot of them out with a car, or to have a baseball bat on hand to kill a few if they get too close. And I'd totally suggest we turn them into stars of game and reality shows, a la the end to Shaun of the Dead. Because why settle for people who aspire to become the brainless undead when you can have the real thing?
4. if you could live inside a web comic of your choice, which would you choose?
I would have no clue, considering I don't follow webcomics all that much anymore, LOL 8D Probably Rice Boy or Dresden Codak, or A Lesson Is Learned But the Damage Is Irreversible if that were still around, or anything Kazu Kibuishi has done.
5.WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON YAOI what is the internet's most annoying meme?
Every. Single. Last. One. Of. Them.
Though if I had to pick one, it would be the whole deal of calling each other "fag(got)" which started on 4chan. Seriously, not cool, guys, not cool at all. >_<
(And as for yaoi, I could potentially dig it, if only it didn't follow conventions and clichés too much, and if only there wasn't so much rape in it. O_o)
