Day 22 | A website
The Comics Curmudgeon
Basically a blog where the guy sporks bad newspaper comics, usually "legacy strips" that are way past their due date but are still hanging on for some reason. It's a bit hard to get into because of the guy's style and the fact that there are quite a few in-jokes, but after a while you come across Beetle Bailey and Teddy Roosevelt/William Howard Taft porn in the comments and it becomes absolutely glorious. XDDDDDDDDDDDDD I don't read it as much as I used to, but I still do from time to time (especially since I get the RSS feed on my f-list).

It's been very hard for me to keep up with work this weekend -- I'm a very slow reader, and I have tons of reading for this weekend into next week. And I haven't even gotten a chance to get to the GIS lab yet. Blah. -_-; Fortunately, I have an appointment with someone in CTLR for Friday morning, so I think that should help. At least my readings for AFP are pretty interesting; I think one of the problems I had last semester was the fact that none of the things I was learning about were at all interesting, and without that I had a harder time caring about those classes and what grades I'd get in those than if I were interested, so that's a good sign.
And I found out recently that I got a B+ for my J-term class. Yes! :D It's still not an A -- and I haven't gotten an A in any of my classes this year so far -- but it's still a great grade.
Other than incessant worrying over my classes and grades, my weekend has been pretty good, actually. Yesterday I went to the first meeting of a new strategic gaming club; I didn't know anyone there, but they were a close group of friends and they seemed to take me in pretty quickly. We played Risk, and I had to get reacquainted with the rules (I still don't quite understand all of them :B), but it was a lot of fun, even though it was pretty disorganized and I was losing big time before the group decided to call it quits. It was great to meet new people that I could potentially be friends with, especially since I don't have a lot of friends here and I still hardly know anyone. I'm really hoping this works out. :-)
I also went to anime club yesterday evening because I heard they were going to start showing new shows. We watched the first two episodes of Durarara!, which I have to say I liked immensely. I'm still not quite sure what it's about, but I'm hooked! It's been a while since I've been hooked on a show like that in a long time, especially an anime, and I can't wait until next week! I just hope it lives up to its promise. O_o; We also saw the first episode of Monster (based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa, which is something I've been wanting to watch/read for a long time) and School Rumble, which is extremely silly and nonsensical and WTF-inducing, but it still hit me in all the right places and will probably be very entertaining. (There was also an episode from the second season of Black Lagoon, but I haven't gotten that far in the series yet.) So yeah, it looks to be a great line-up this semester, and I plan on going regularly even if I'm inundated with work. ^_^;
Here's the first ED to Monster, which I liked:
There are a lot of prog rock tendencies in a lot of the music that I like, but I'm not much of a prog rock fan, and this song has a lot of proggy stuff in it. Still, this David Sylvian guy sounds interesting, and I'll probably try to check out his stuff in the near future.
I also opened the Valentine's Day gift my family sent to me when I came back last week. A heart-shaped box of Gillham & Grand chocolates, a chocolate bar from the same company, and a bag of chocolate hearts. I couldn't ask for anything better. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day! You all are awesome and amazing people; I'm so glad to know all of you, even if it hasn't been for long or we rarely talk. Thanks for sticking around, and I hope you had a great day!! ;-)
Here's an appropriate meme for the occasion:

And here's Jay Smooth's latest video:
As much as I agree with him 100%, I still think that one of the few ways we can start talking and trying to answer the structural questions he talks about is by trying to get blacks and other marginalized people better representation in the 24-news cycle and in pop culture. Tokenism, cultural appropriation, condescending portrayals, people like John Mayer putting their feet in their mouths, and things like that need to happen less often before questions of inequality can be discussed on a much wider scale than it already is, and in fact asking questions in the pop culture realm can (and often do) lead to people starting to think more about the more important structural issues. Anyway, some food for thought (like most of Jay's videos). ;-)
