quadruplify: Stuart Staples (lead singer of Tindersticks) surrounded by pigeons (depressed)
I had my follow-up eye exam today; my doctor wasn't in, so I'll have to wait until early next week for the results. I got them done because there were a couple of abnormalities from the exam a couple of weeks ago, but I doubt anything bad will come of them because I got the same tests done the last time I had my eyes checked two years ago, and nothing came of that. Certainly not as bad as my sister having to have an ingrown toenail removed today, that's for sure. ._.

My sister goes back to school on Monday, though I still have another week to go before I go back to college. It sucks that this summer is pretty much over when I haven't even done much of anything, though I can't say it was completely wasted; I wasn't excruciatingly bored and I did enjoy myself, and besides it's not as if we had much of a summer to begin with -- I mean, after a couple of weeks of relatively hot weather, today it didn't even crack 70°F. In August. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON SERIOUSLY?? -_- Anyway, I figure with this extra week I can cram in as much books and other stuff that I wanted to do as possible; we'll see what happens between now and a week from tomorrow when I go back.

And speaking of reading:

"Reading Rainbow" Reaches Its Final Chapter

I admit I rarely watched this show when I was younger -- it wasn't the most interesting show to me at the time, LeVar Burton kind of creeped me out, and I prefered "Wishbone" anyway (creeptastic as that was), and I also didn't know the show was still on until today. But this definitely makes me feel sad, because it helped thousands (and probably millions) of children to enjoy reading and see why it was important, and I can't think of anything else in the media that teaches kids why they should read rather than how to read. I don't understand the mentality behind starting kids off with phonics and grammar; it has the tendency to turn kids away from reading and not make them see it as something that can be enjoyed -- it helps to show them a good reason why they need to learn those things, and "Reading Rainbow" was meant to do that, and did it well. (Incidentally, I learned to read because of TV; there was [and probably still is] a program called "Learn to Read" on WNET/Channel 13, the PBS station out of NYC, which was meant to help adult literacy. It was old even when I was watching it, and it certainly wasn't kid-oriented, but because of it by the time I entered school I could read rather well. This made all the phonics we had to go over painfully boring. ^_^;)

I guess because of all of this, this song is somewhat appropriate:

Also, I came across this on Facebook a few days ago, even though I'm sure at least some of you have already seen this:

Either someone really loves Evangelion or really hates Evangelion, I'm not sure what. )

And now more memes! Both of these were ganked from [livejournal.com profile] mcollinknight:

MEME #1:

• Pick 20 of your favorite movies.
• Go to IMDb, and find a quote from each movie.
• Post them here for everyone to guess.
• Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
• No Googling/using IMDb search functions.

Movie quotes! )

The second one is the "list 15 books that you liked/changed your life/are the most important to you" meme that has been going around on Facebook. In no particular order:
